Heinrich Winkelmann Fellowship at the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum
The Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum (DBM), Leibniz Research Museum for Geo-resources, is again offering two international research grants for 2025 in the departments mining history, mining archaeology, material and conservation sciences, archaeometallurgy and in the Montanhistorisches Dokumentationszentrum (montan.dok).
The three-month research residencies within the framework of the Heinrich Winkelmann Fellowship at the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum (DBM) offer an excellent opportunity for postdoctoral researchers to realize their own project within resource history, mining history, archaeometallurgy, materials science, conservation and restoration sciences or mining archaeology. The unique character of the DBM lies in the link created between a top-line research institute and a vibrant museum. Our research projects are relevant and applicable in the national and international arena and are frequently conducted in partnership with prestigious university and non-university institutions, as well as partners in the worlds of culture and science.
Fellowship holders have access to the research infrastructure of the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum for their projects. This includes the Montanhistorisches Dokumentationszentrum (montan.dok) with the departments Mining Archive, Library/Photothek and Museal Collections within the framework of the applicable regulations for use, as well as the Collection and Library of the Mining Archaeology and Archaeometallurgy and, by arrangement, the research laboratory. In addition, the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum cooperates closely with the Historical Institute and the Institute for Archaeological Sciences at the Ruhr-University Bochum as well as with the Department of Applied Materials Science at the TH Georg Agricola University, so that these resources are available to scientists as guests.
Preference will be given to applications that have a direct connection to the accessible holdings of montan.dok, individual exhibition objects and/or the research foci of the research departments archaeometallurgy, mining history, material and conservation sciences and mining archaeology . Applicants are expected to present their research projects in colloquia and/or lecture series at the Leibniz Research Museum and at the Ruhr-University Bochum and to make the results available to the public. Preferably this is done via the in-house journals "Der Anschnitt" and "Metalla" or other relevant journals. The preparation of a third-party funding application for a longer research project at the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum can be part of the research stay and is explicitly supported.
The fellowship includes a grant of 2 000 € per month and the provision of accommodation at favourable conditions. It is aimed at postdoctoral researchers, especially in the fields of history, archaeology, materials science, conservation and restoration sciences or archaeometry. Applications from abroad are welcome. Re-applications are allowed. Current employees or fellowship holders of the DBM are excluded
